Speaker Bio

Dr. Vijay Shilpiekandula is an inventor-operator turned investor with 11 years of experience applying a systems-builder's lens to fundamental equity investing. In a prior decade, he was a researcher and operator, inventing and implementing hardware and software systems to tackle real-world constraints across compute, algorithms, and power. He received 14 patents for that body of work. He holds an Erdős number of 4 for designing and deploying parallelizable model predictive control algorithms for real-time factory automation. He is an active contributing member of the Value Investors Club, where he drew on his systems co-design background and was early to flag the memory wall and the optical-interconnect bottleneck as gating factors in scaling intelligence. He won the 2024 Sohn Idea Contest after a blind review process by a panel of investment industry leaders. In his 2024 presentation at the NYC Sohn Conference, he was one of the early voices in identifying the memory bottleneck and its link to lithography as a constraint in the AI infrastructure buildout. Prior to the January 2025 market selloff driven by DeepSeek fears, he pointed out that model distillation and open-source replication would be defining developments for the industry. He argued that generative AI differs from previous platform shifts such as the internet or cloud buildouts. This is because of his early variant view that hardware and physical infrastructure should become critical differentiators and accrue substantial value. Vijay holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from MIT, focused on mechatronics and systems co-design for nanometer-precision positioning, an MBA from Harvard Business School, and a B.Tech from IIT Madras. He resides in New York with his family, where, when not running in Central Park, he enjoys building fun science projects with his young children
