Ian completed his PhD in Computational Chemistry from the University of Oxford in 2011, using the first generation of CUDA and NVIDIA GPUs to study reaction dynamics and material interface kinetics. He transitioned after to a written journalist, analysing x86 and Arm processor microarchitecture for AnandTech – an engineering focused media organization. This evolved into covering fundamental semiconductor announcements and research from IEDM, ISSCC and other conferences such as Hot Chips. In 2022, Ian left AnandTech and created More Than Moore, an independent analyst firm to engage with semiconductor companies on strategy, technical engagements, and the business outlook. More Than Moore which also has a newsletter, focusing on business and financial developments. Ian also consults to several institutional investors on a regular basis, often on the finer technical aspects of the latest product offerings in CPU, GPU, and AI. Ian also runs an expansive YouTube channel called TechTechPotato (it’s about technology and chips) to produce engaging and educational semiconductor related content in video format. Ian is one of the few industry analysts to cover both video and written media, with a technical background and the ability to form an accessible and detailed story from complex semiconductor topics.
